Sorry, last question on this subject. In the past there was great praise for the p-c 7518 or 7018? as the best undertable router. My question is, for a luthier what will the above router do that a p-c 2 3/4 or 1 3/4 hp router cannot do?

big routers can handle big bits. for instance lmi sells a long double bearing flush trimmer that they expressly warn agiast trying to use in the smaller routers. ignore the fact that they sell the bit far to dear, the advice is sound.

besides if you have a router table eventually you are going to want to do things....

I'm considering getting a dedicated 3-1/4HP router for exclusive use in a router table. I'd like to stay with PC since I already have a 690 type and laminate trimmer and really like PC. Here are my options:

1) PC-7518... 5 speed (13000, 16000, 19000, 21000 RPM)

2) PC-7519... single speed (21000 RPM) and about $50 less in price...~$275 (assumed from only one source)

3) Question: How important is the speed versitility? Under what conditions will I need the slower speeds?

4) Question: Where is the best (cheapest) place to buy these online?

5) Question: Are there other options I should consider?

regarding your question about the need for slow speeds: if you are ever going to use large diameter bits you need the slower speeds. in luthierie an example of such use would be using one of the large bits for neck shaft shaping as described in an earlier thread a week or so ago. far too dangerous otherwise.

some prefer a plunge router such as the dewalt 625 in a table installation, mainly for ease of adjustment. there have been innumerable articles in the woodworking magazines on the subject. pat warner's site offers a lot of wisdom on all aspects of routing. his brief discussion of selection is here:

when i was making the upgrade jump from a p-c 690 in a table number of years ago i read everything i could find and ended up going for the p-c 7518 with the bench dog pro lift. just one person's choice but the combination has given me no reason to regret it.
